As someone who has spent countless hours pulling impossible maneuvers and launching missiles into enemy aircraft across previous ACE COMBAT games, I was instantly interested when Wings of Theve was revealed.
The series has always done a fantastic job of blending arcade-style flying with cinematic storytelling, and from what we’ve seen so far, ACE COMBAT 8 looks ready to push both of those elements even further.
The countdown for this article is based on the game’s Deluxe Edition Early Access launch, which begins on September 28, 2026, at 6:00 PM EDT.

The standard release follows a few days later on October 2, 2026.
ACE COMBAT 8 continues the franchise’s tradition of high-speed aerial warfare while introducing new technology and a stronger focus on pilot storytelling.
Players take control of an elite combat pilot and participate in large-scale military operations across breathtaking skies filled with dynamic weather systems and evolving battlefields.
Beyond the dogfights, the game also explores the human side of warfare. Between missions, you’ll interact with squad members, experience first-person cinematic sequences, and make your way through a narrative that focuses on leadership, sacrifice, and survival.
Personally, this is one of the areas I’m most excited about. The ACE COMBAT series has always been at its best when it balances intense aerial action with memorable characters and emotional storytelling.
One feature that immediately stood out to me was the game’s upgraded cloud technology.
PROJECT ACES describes the skies as “living,” with dynamic, multi-layered cloud formations that affect both the visuals and atmosphere of combat.
If previous ACE COMBAT games are anything to go by, these weather effects won’t just look good. They’ll likely play a role in how battles unfold, creating moments where visibility, positioning, and timing become just as important as firepower.
ACE COMBAT 8 is also introducing what the developers describe as the largest online mode in franchise history.
I’m particularly interested in the new air base lobby. It sounds like players will be able to interact before launching into missions, which should make the multiplayer side feel more connected than previous entries.
At launch, players can purchase the Standard Edition for $69.99.

The biggest draw here is definitely the 3-day early access, which is why this countdown is based on September 28 rather than the standard October 2 release date.
Personally, if you’re already planning to spend dozens of hours in multiplayer and want access to future content through the Premium ACE Pass Plus, the extra $20 could be worth it. Otherwise, the Standard Edition already includes some solid bonuses with the F-14A and ACE COMBAT ZERO.
For me, ACE COMBAT has always occupied a unique space in gaming.
It’s not a hardcore flight simulator, but it isn’t a mindless arcade shooter either. The series strikes a balance between accessibility and spectacle that very few games manage to achieve.
Wings of Theve looks like it’s building on everything that made previous entries successful while expanding the multiplayer experience in a meaningful way. Add in the upgraded visuals, dynamic skies, and a fresh story, and this is easily one of my most anticipated games of 2026.
Until then, I’ll be counting down the days until I can get back into the cockpit.
