Ever since I saw the reveal for Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis, I’ve been excited to see Lara Croft return to her roots. While I’ve enjoyed the more modern Tomb Raider games, there’s something special about the original 1996 adventure that helped define the action-adventure genre.

This isn’t just a remaster either. It’s a complete reimagining built from the ground up, combining the spirit of the original game with modern visuals, gameplay systems, and a few surprises along the way.

Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis takes Lara Croft back to where it all began.

The game is a complete reimagining of Lara’s original 1996 adventure, rebuilding the classic experience with modern technology while preserving the atmosphere and sense of discovery that made the original so memorable.

As Lara Croft, you’ll travel across the globe in search of the scattered pieces of the Scion, a legendary artifact said to possess immeasurable power.

Along the way, you’ll explore:

• The jungles of Peru
• Ancient ruins in Greece
• The deserts of Egypt
• A mysterious Mediterranean island tied to the legend of Atlantis

Of course, this wouldn’t be a Tomb Raider game without deadly traps, dangerous wildlife, ancient puzzles, and plenty of secrets hidden off the beaten path.

Why I’m Excited For This Remake

For me, the biggest selling point is that the developers aren’t simply recreating the original game scene for scene.

They’re using Unreal Engine 5 to rebuild the adventure from scratch while modernizing the gameplay for today’s audience.

The original Tomb Raider was revolutionary, but let’s be honest, some parts haven’t aged particularly gracefully. Tank controls and awkward platforming were acceptable in 1996, but players expect much more today.

What I’m hoping for is a game that captures the feeling of exploring ancient ruins and uncovering forgotten mysteries while delivering smoother combat, traversal, and puzzle-solving.

If they can pull that off, this could end up being the definitive way to experience Lara Croft’s first adventure.

Deluxe Edition ($69.99)

For just $10 more, the Deluxe Edition includes a bonus story expansion, which could end up being worthwhile depending on its size and quality.

Personally, the DLC Story Pack is the real reason I’d consider upgrading.

Should You Pre-Order Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis?

If you’re already a Tomb Raider fan, I think there’s plenty to be excited about here.

The combination of classic Tomb Raider exploration, Unreal Engine 5 visuals, and modernized gameplay sounds like exactly what many fans have been asking for over the years.

That said, I’m still hoping to see more gameplay before making a final decision. The atmosphere and locations look fantastic, but I want to see how the puzzles, combat, and traversal systems feel in action.

My Final Thoughts

As someone who grew up watching Lara Croft become one of gaming’s most recognizable characters, this is easily one of my most anticipated releases of 2027.

The idea of revisiting the original Tomb Raider adventure with modern technology is incredibly appealing, especially if the developers manage to preserve the sense of mystery and exploration that made the first game so memorable.

Between the jungles of Peru, the ruins of Greece, the deserts of Egypt, and the mystery of Atlantis itself, it feels like this adventure could capture everything that made Tomb Raider special in the first place.
