The sword, or the katana, is the main weapon that Musashi wields in Onimusha: Way of the Sword, from killing the first Genma to finishing off bosses. There are various sword skins you can get and use in the game. Although they don’t boost your stats, they do make Musashi look even cooler while slashing through enemies. All Sword Skins in Onimusha Way of the Sword
You need to remember that sword skins in this game are purely cosmetic. Swapping one for another won't raise your damage output or add hidden effects.
What it does do is give you a reason to explore the map and finish side content, since most skins are locked behind a collectible called Lion Dogs. Once you've earned a skin, you can put it on Musashi's blade by visiting a Spirit Mirror and picking the "Change Appearance" option.
Most of the game's skins open up once you track down enough Lion Dogs scattered around the world. A handful of others come from special game editions instead of in-game effort.

Lion Dogs are those little spirit companions hidden throughout the world. You must finish the quest "What Lurks in the Shadows" and talk to Lady Murasaki, who fills you in on what these creatures are and marks some of their locations on your map with paw prints.
From there, more Lion Dog spots open up as you clear specific story missions. Check the Curious Cases menu at any time to see how many dogs you've found and where the remaining ones are hiding.
