Nvidia’s flagship neural graphics technology is getting significantly lighter and faster. Following community feedback over high performance costs and aggressive visual changes, Nvidia has deployed a major architectural update to DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering, trimming the neural network down to 118 million parameters and cutting its operational GPU overhead in half. The refined model debuts in NBA 2K27 on October 16 before rolling out to Hogwarts Legacy on November 5, 2026, for GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs, RTX Spark laptops, and GeForce NOW.
How Nvidia Cut DLSS 5's Overhead in Half
Unlike DLSS Super Resolution (which upscales pixels) or Frame Generation (which interpolates frames), DLSS 5 uses engine motion vectors, depth buffers, and lighting data to synthesize photoreal material textures and shadow interactions. However, running an active neural network alongside path-traced rendering created severe processing overhead in early implementations.
The October update tackles this bottleneck directly:
- 24% Smaller Footprint: Shrunk the neural network down to roughly 118 million parameters.
- 20% VRAM Reduction at 4K: Drastically lowers high-resolution memory pressure.
- 2X Faster Execution: The AI model processes frames twice as fast as the September build and ten times faster than its initial GTC 2026 debut.
In practical gameplay, this does not mean your frame rate doubles, but it frees up vital GPU compute cycles. In NBA 2K27, running the updated model at 4K pushed frame rates from 65 FPS to 90 FPS—a 38% real-world leap.
Hogwarts Legacy Gets DLSS 5 on November 5
There are already few games that support DLSS 5. Hogwarts Legacy already supports DLSS Super Resolution, Multi Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction. The November 5 patch injects full DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering to enhance cloth physics, ambient occlusion, and lighting reactivity across Hogwarts Castle.
Crucially, the new demonstration reveals a noticeable change in direction from Nvidia's initial showcase in March. Early demos drew community criticism for an "uncanny valley" effect, where the AI model excessively smoothed and altered character faces.
Working with developer Avalanche Software, the studio leveraged the DLSS 5 SDK’s masking controls to apply neural enhancement selectively—grounding environmental lighting and wardrobe textures while preserving the original artistic intent and facial geometry of characters. Enthusiasts have been using mods to showcase old games with and without DLSS 5 enabled. The results have been stunning, hyping up the community to no end on the internet.

Bonus: New "Preset C" Frame Generation Beta
Alongside the DLSS 5 update, Nvidia has rolled out an experimental Frame Generation Performance Mode (Preset C) within the latest NVIDIA app beta.
Designed for both GeForce RTX 40 and RTX 50 Series GPUs, Preset C swaps in a lighter interpolation algorithm that delivers up to 35% higher frame generation throughput on cards like the RTX 5060, trading off minor edge artifacts in fast motion.
How to Enable Preset C:
- Open the NVIDIA App and ensure you have opted into the Beta via
Settings → About. - Navigate to the Graphics tab and select your supported game (or choose Global Settings).
- Scroll down to Driver Settings → DLSS Override – Model Presets.
- Set the mode to Custom, open the Frame Generation dropdown, and select Preset C.
- Click Apply (a system reboot may be required if the option doesn't immediately appear).
