Sony is not burying this one. PS5 boxes are now displaying a printed notice warning players that from January, 2028, all newly released PlayStation games will only be available to purchase in digital format. Physical discs for games released before that date will continue to work on existing hardware, but anything new after that point will exist purely in the PlayStation Store or as digital codes at retail. The message is printed in multiple languages and sitting right on the box where nobody can miss it.

We Thought the PS5 No Disc Backlash Would Change Something

Sony announced this direction previously, and the community's reaction was not warm. Players pushed back hard, and there was a reasonable window where it felt like the backlash might at least slow the rollout or soften the approach. That has clearly not happened. Putting the notice directly on PS5 packaging is not the behaviour of a company reconsidering its position. It is a company that has made its decision and is now managing expectations ahead of a deadline that is getting closer.

The honest reality is that Sony's numbers probably justify this from a business perspective. The overwhelming majority of PlayStation game sales are already digital and have been for some time. When most of your customers are already buying digitally, removing the physical option is a financially logical step even if it is an unpopular one with a vocal portion of the community.

Xbox Might Be Going the Other Way

What makes this timing interesting is the contrast with what is being reported on the Xbox side. Leaks around the Xbox Project Helix console suggest Microsoft may be including a built-in disc drive, which would make it the only next-gen platform with native physical media support if true. Nothing is confirmed on that front but if it holds up, Xbox could quietly pick up a meaningful segment of players who genuinely care about physical ownership and feel pushed out by Sony's direction.

Money Matters, a Lot

We understand the business case. Digital is where the money is, and Sony is following it. But understanding a decision does not mean agreeing with it. Physical media matters for reasons that go beyond nostalgia. Owning a disc means your game does not disappear if a service shuts down, if your account gets banned, or if a publisher decides to remove a title from the store. It means you can sell it, lend it, or pass it on. Those are real forms of ownership that digital simply does not replicate, regardless of how convenient the download button is.

We would always prefer consoles that support both. The ideal platform is one where players who want physical can have it and players who prefer digital can have that too. Removing the option entirely to serve the majority at the expense of the minority is not the direction we want to see the industry head, even if the spreadsheet says it makes sense.
