GTA 6 isn't out yet. No gameplay has been officially shown. And yet pre-orders have already broken records that nobody in the industry has ever seen before. That alone should tell you something massive is coming on August 27th, when Rockstar decided to release the Gameplay Look for GTA 6 on Netflix.
Why Did Rockstar Choose Netflix for GTA 6 Gameplay Look
Let's look back at the previous trailers first. The first GTA 6 trailer has 288 million views on YouTube since December 2023. The second trailer pulled 177 million views after dropping in May 2025. Rockstar already knows how to pull a crowd online without anybody's help. So the Netflix deal isn't about needing the subscribers. It's definitely about something bigger than that.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick told Variety the real motivation pretty clearly: This is about signaling to the entire entertainment industry that GTA 6 is not just a video game launch. It's a major entertainment event, similar to the biggest movies and TV shows of the year. When asked if that was the idea behind the Netflix deal, Zelnick said, "I think that's a pretty brilliant way to look at it."

Netflix VP of nonfiction Brandon Riegg agreed, saying GTA reveals have become big cultural moments on their own. He added that the partnership fits Netflix's goal of bringing big stories from different types of entertainment to as many people as possible. So Netflix also wanted this deal.
According to Variety's sources, the streamer actively went after the opportunity because it wants to be part of major moments, just like it is with live sports. And GTA 6 is definitely one of those moments.
The GTA 6 Extended Look on Netflix is a Must-See Event
What I find most telling is also the hints Zelnick has been dropping through the interview with Bloomberg. He confirmed to Jason Schreier, the American journalist and author who primarily covers the video game industry, that the August 27 showcase will feel like watching a Netflix show and called it a must-see event.
He also said that once you watch it, you'll understand exactly why Netflix was the right platform. I feel like this is going to be a high-budget cinematic and not just small marketing material, and that's why they have been keeping silent for almost two months after the pre-order started.
Schreier himself expects it to deliver a "meaty" look at actual gameplay, which would be the first real in-game footage Rockstar has publicly shown. If that's true, August 27 is going to be a very loud day on the internet.

Zelnick did fumble one number during his Variety interview, saying he thought Netflix had 200 million subscribers. But actually, Netflix has already crossed 302 million subscribers in 2026. Even with the undercount, the point stands: this puts GTA 6 in front of hundreds of millions of people who aren't gaming news readers, aren't watching Rockstar's socials, but are on Netflix every night.
GTA 6 Pre-Orders Are Breaking Records
Take-Two called GTA 6 pre-orders exceptional during their latest earnings call. But it's Zelnick's follow-up that shocked me: "We've not seen anything like this before. Not at Take-Two. Not in the industry."
Take-Two became the world's largest publicly traded video game publisher this week. These are the people who launched Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA 5, BioShock, and Borderlands. For their CEO to say they've never seen numbers like this, even before a single second of gameplay is shown, is extraordinary.

The company's Q1 revenue also came in at $1.39 billion, beating the projected range of $1.32–$1.37 billion. Analysts are now projecting GTA 6 will generate between $3.3 billion and $5.2 billion in its first week alone.
When Schreier asked Zelnick what his personal plans were for GTA 6 launch day, the CEO simply replied: "It's ultra top secret at the moment." So what I am advising is mark your calendar for August 27th and get your Netflix account ready. This is definitely going to be one of the biggest reveals in the history of entertainment, not just gaming.
