What Are Dried Ghast Blocks?

A dried ghast block looks like a sad, shriveled version of a regular ghast. It has a gray color and a frowning face that makes it look quite unhappy. These blocks are completely harmless and cannot move or attack you.

The block is special because it can transform into a living creature. When you put it in water, it slowly becomes happier over time. After enough time in water, it turns into a ghastling – a baby happy ghast that will eventually grow into a full-sized rideable creature.

Dried ghast blocks are small, taking up just one block of space. You can pick them up easily and carry them in your inventory like any other block.

How to Find Dried Ghast Blocks

Location in the Nether

Dried ghast blocks can only be found naturally in the Nether dimension. You need to travel to the Nether using a nether portal to start your search.

Once in the Nether, you need to find a specific biome called the Soul Sand Valley. This biome has a brownish landscape covered in soul sand and soul soil. You will also see blue fires and hear spooky sounds.

Nether fossils are the key to finding dried ghast blocks. The blocks have a 33% chance to appear near these fossil structures. This means about 1 in every 3 fossils you find will have a dried ghast block nearby. Once you spot a dried ghast block, mining it is very easy. You can break it with:

  • Any tool (pickaxe, shovel, axe, etc.)
  • Your bare hands
  • Any other item

The block breaks instantly, no matter what you use. It will always drop itself when broken, so you don’t need to worry about losing it.

How to Craft Dried Ghast Blocks

If you cannot find dried ghast blocks naturally, you can make them yourself using a crafting recipe. To craft one dried ghast block, you need:

  • 8 Ghast Tears: Ghast tears are the hardest part of this recipe. You can only get them by killing regular ghasts in the Nether. Regular ghasts drop 0-1 ghast tears when killed. You might need to kill many ghasts to get 8 tears.
  • 1 Soul Sand block: Soul sand is much easier to find. It covers the ground in Soul Sand Valley biomes. Simply dig it up with any shovel. You only need one block for the recipe.

Crafting Recipe

Once you have all the materials:

  1. Open your crafting table
  2. Place the soul sand block in the center square
  3. Put one ghast tear in each of the 8 squares around the soul sand
  4. Take your finished dried ghast block

This recipe makes one dried ghast block, which is enough to eventually get one happy ghast.

Alternative Method: Bartering

There is another way to get dried ghast blocks without fighting ghasts or exploring fossils. Adult piglins in the Nether will sometimes trade dried ghast blocks for gold ingots. Here’s how it works:

  1. Find adult piglins (not zombified ones)
  2. Throw gold ingots at them
  3. Wait for them to pick up the gold
  4. They will throw random items back at you
  5. There is about a 2% chance they will give you a dried ghast block

This method is not reliable because the chance is very low. You might need to trade many gold ingots before getting a dried ghast block.

Remember to stay safe in the Nether and bring proper equipment. Once you have your dried ghast block, you’re on your way to having your very own happy ghast companion. Take your time and be patient – the reward of flying through the sky on a friendly ghast is worth the effort.
