The best Gears of War: E-Day Assault build puts you right in the middle of everything; you are not rushing into melee range or camping at the back of the map with a sniper rifle. You are exactly where the action is, using cover, controlling groups of enemies, and putting out steady damage while your squad stays organized. This is also the best starting class if Horde Siege is new to you. There is less to figure out here than with the other classes, which means you can focus on learning the mission flow without getting lost in the build.

Retention Battery makes your Sonic Disruptor stun last longer. That extra time means your whole squad gets more shots into helpless enemies before they start moving again. It is the single best mod you can put on this class ability.
Opportunity Targeting works directly with the stun. When enemies are frozen, they take more damage.
Cover Is Life is your safety net. This mod speeds up your health regen while you are behind cover, so you can stay in the fight longer without depending on a Medic to bail you out.
The Prototype Lancer is your main gun, and it comes in your starting loadout. It is an S-tier rifle that handles everything at mid-range without any trouble. Cover Brace is the most important mod on it as your accuracy from behind cover gets a big boost, and since Assault lives in cover, this fires on constantly. Full Metal Jacket gives extra damage after a Perfect Reload. Holo Sight adds a light zoom so you can reach enemies at slightly longer distances. Chainsaw Autoloader means every chainsaw execution refills your magazine perfectly, keeping your Perfect Ammo chain alive.
The Snub is just a backup when both primary weapons need to reload at the same time. Full Metal Jacket and Forged Barrel give it more punch than the default version.

How to Play the Assault Class
Your job every mission is to hold a mid-range position near your squad's current objective. You are not the first one through a door, and you are not hiding in the back corner. Find a spot where you can see a decent chunk of the area and where the Sonic Disruptor will hit the most enemies at once when they push in.
The Prototype Lancer should be your gun for most of the fight. Practice Active Reloads; hitting the white bar at the right moment gives you Perfect Ammo, which does more damage and triggers the Full Metal Jacket bonus. Once that rhythm clicks, you will be landing clean reload after clean reload.
Stay close enough to your squad that you can hear and see what they are dealing with. Assault has no self-heal tool, so your survival comes from smart cover use, and Cover Is Life doing its job passively. If you try to push forward like a Breacher without the defensive tools, you will go down fast.
