GTA 6 launch is getting closer by the day. Fans are hotly speculating about console hardware capabilities, asking which console will support GTA 6 the best, and Xbox Series S keeps popping up in the conversations. Why? Because Xbox Series S is the most affordable console that can play GTA 6 right now. While Take-Two Interactive has said it isn't concerned about scaling the game to the smaller console, the real technical question is just how smooth GTA 6 will run on Xbox Series S.

How Smooth Will GTA 6 Run on the Xbox Series S

Well, until now, Rockstar hasn't featured GTA VI gameplay running on the Xbox Series S version at all. Rockstar's Extended Look on Netflix from late August was captured on a base PS5, running at 30 frames per second. According to Digital Foundry's breakdown, that footage was running at 1440p (without DRS), which is very high for a game this detailed.

Hardware Bottlenecks: Where Xbox Series S Cut Corners

- CPU

The CPU is like the brain of the console. In GTA 6, it will handle graphics like traffic, pedestrians, police, physics, and everything happening around the city. The Series S is basically a smaller, cheaper version of the Series X with only 200 MHz less power than its older sibling. However, it uses the same CPU as its bigger sibling, just slightly slower.

That is good news for GTA 6. Rockstar should not need to remove lots of cars or NPCs just to make the game run on Xbox Series S. Vice City should still feel busy and alive on the smaller Xbox.

- GPU

The GPU is responsible for rendering the graphics you see on screen. This is where the Series S falls behind the X. We've seen titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 face feature sacrifices on Series S due to tight memory budgets.

Its GPU has around one-third of the power of the Series X. Because of that, the Series S may need to use lower resolution, simpler lighting, less detailed shadows, and a shorter draw distance.

- RAM

The RAM could be an even bigger concern. The Xbox Series S has 10GB of RAM, while the Series X and PS5 have 16GB. RAM helps the game load and keep things like textures, buildings, characters, and other details ready. With less RAM available, GTA 6 could have lower-quality textures, more pop-in, and less detail in the distance.

We have already seen memory limitations affect other games. Baldur's Gate 3, for example, launched on Xbox Series S without split-screen co-op because of memory limitations. To fit Vice City’s high-resolution world into this footprint, Rockstar will likely reduce texture mipmap levels, dial back geometry draw distances, and rely on aggressive background asset streaming via the Velocity Architecture.

Expected Resolution and FPS For GTA 6 On Xbox Series S

Now for our own estimate. Based on the PS5 footage, the hardware gap, and how other big open-world games have handled the Series S, here's what we expect to get from Xbox while playing GTA 6:

ConsoleExpected Frame RateExpected Resolution
Xbox Series S30fpsAround 720p to 1080p, upscaled
Xbox Series X30fpsAround 1440p, possibly higher
PS530fpsNative 1440p (shown in trailer)
PS5 Pro30fps, maybe a 40fps optionHigher than base PS5

If the PS5 version runs at 30fps, the Series S is unlikely to reach 60fps. The CPU will probably be the main limit, so 30fps may be the target across consoles at launch. GTA 6 will also likely use dynamic resolution, lowering image quality during busy scenes to keep the frame rate stable. Upscaling will then make the image look sharper.

Will GTA 6 Run at 1440p on Xbox Series S

Probably not. Despite being marketed as a 1440p console, the Series S often runs demanding games around 900p-1080p with upscaling. For comparison, Starfield runs at around 900p and 30fps on the Xbox Series S. GTA 6 could run at a similar resolution or even lower.

How Past Rockstar Games Handled Weaker Hardware

Rockstar has a good track record here, and it's the main reason we are not panicking. Red Dead Redemption 2 ran at 864p and 30fps on the base Xbox One, compared to native 4K on the Xbox One X. If you've played the game on a base Xbox One, you would know that the resolution gap was obvious in distant trees and grass. But the frame rate stayed steady, and it still looked great.

GTA 5 on Xbox 360 is another example. It was pushing that old hardware to its limit, with frame drops in busy areas, yet millions of people still loved it anyway. The Series S is in a much better spot than the 360 ever was, mostly because of that shared CPU.

Verdict - Should You Buy Xbox Series S to Play GTA 6

Buy it if:

You are on a strict budget and want access to GTA 6 on day one. You will get the exact same storyline, world design, and core gameplay mechanics as players on premium consoles. If you game on a 1080p monitor or a modest living-room TV, a stable 30 FPS will deliver an enjoyable, cinematic playthrough.

Skip it if:

You can play on a large 4K TV and might notice soft textures, distant pop-in, or resolution scaling artifacts. For crisp image clarity, expanded draw distances, and enhanced lighting effects, the Series X or PS5 remains the recommended console to play GTA VI.

FAQs

Will GTA 6 run at 60fps on Xbox Series S?

Probably not. Most signs point to a 30fps target to keep performance steady.

Does the Xbox Series S version have fewer NPCs or cars?

It shouldn't. The Series S has nearly the same CPU as the Series X, which handles crowds and traffic.

Will GTA 6 look blurry on Xbox Series S?

It might drop resolution at times, but FSR upscaling should help keep the image looking clean.
