GTA 6 is Not Coming to Xbox Game Pass at Launch

Well, no one from Rockstar or Microsoft has made an official statement specifically about GTA 6 launching on Game Pass on day one. But Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick laid out the company's stance pretty clearly back in 2022 while speaking at GI Live: Online, and nothing has changed since.

He said offering a frontline console title on a subscription service on day one doesn't make economic sense. His exact reasoning was that consumers aren't in a position to pay what it would actually cost publishers, and Take-Two can't flip their business model around for a deal that doesn't work financially.

That quote might not be for GTA 6 specifically, but it covers every major Rockstar release. Just look at what happened with their latest two big releases:

GTA 5 took over six years to land on the service. RDR2 was faster, coming in at just under two years. But even then, neither stayed permanently.

So there's been no rumor, leak, or insider report suggesting any deal is being negotiated for GTA 6 on Game Pass, even down the line. The silence from both sides tells you a lot.

And think about GTA Online. Shark Cards alone have made billions. GTA 6 online mode is expected to be even bigger. If the game is added to Game Pass at launch, many players might subscribe instead of buying the game at full price. That could also mean less money from in-game microtransactions, and Rockstar isn't going to let that happen.

Asha Sharma's Game Pass Push Faces a Problem With GTA 6

To be fair to Microsoft, they have been doing a lot to make Game Pass worth it. Every first-party Xbox title, like Halo Infinite, Forza Motorsport, and Starfield, launches on Game Pass day one. The pitch is that you pay a monthly fee, and you will never miss a major release. Of course, the value is there, but I think it's only for first-party content.

But it will face a problem with GTA 6. Microsoft can only control what they own. They can't force Take-Two or Rockstar to do anything. And since Take-Two has already made their philosophy clear, this is just not a deal that's going to happen on their terms. Microsoft either knows this or has already been turned down. Either way, don't expect an announcement.

When Could GTA 6 Come to Xbox Game Pass

Realistically, GTA 6 may not come to Game Pass for several years after launch. If Rockstar follows the timeline of GTA 5 or Red Dead Redemption 2, it could take years before a subscription release is considered. The PC version would likely come first as well, giving the developer more time to sell the game directly.

If you want to play GTA 6 on day one, buying the game is the safest option. The Standard Edition costs $80, while the Ultimate Edition costs $100. There is currently no confirmed Game Pass release date, so waiting for it could mean a very long wait.
