From the moment Harry Potter first stepped onto Platform 9 3/4, we’ve all dreamt of wielding magic. Now, thanks to the power of Siri and iPhone Shortcuts, you can get closer than ever to casting your spells. While you might not be able to levitate feathers (yet!), you can use your iPhone to perform some familiar enchantments and charms, from turning on your flashlight to launching your favorite apps with a magical twist. Let’s dive into the world of Harry Potter with spells you can use with Siri and Shortcuts app.

18 Harry Potter Spells for Siri and Shortcuts App to Use on iPhones

To fully experience the magic, you’ll need to make sure Siri is ready to listen to your commands.

First, enable Listen for Hey Siri in your iPhone Settings and ensure that Allow Siri When Locked is also toggled on. This will let you cast spells even when your phone is locked. Here’s how to enable these settings:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on Siri and search or Apple Intelligence & Siri on your iPhone.
  3. Tap on Talk & Type to Siri and select the Siri or Hey Siri option.
  4. Go back and Toggle on the Allow Siri When Locked option.

Pro Tip: These Harry Potter spells aren’t standard Siri commands so your virtual assistant may struggle to understand. By adding the spell names as contacts, you’re creating a phonetic link that helps Siri understand spells’ pronunciation. This improves the accuracy of Siri’s speech recognition when you use the Harry Potter spells.

1. Siri, Lumos

Lumos is the spell that Harry Potter used to light up his surroundings. It is one of the first spells Harry Potter learns. You might remember Harry using it in the Forbidden Forest and while sneaking around Hogwarts at night.

Saying Hey Siri Lumos, or Siri, Lumos will have the same effect on your iPhone which will turn on your flashlight. This spell is already integrated into Siri so you just need to say this spell to Siri. No Shortcuts needed.

  • Pronunciation – LOO-mos
  • Purpose – Turn on the Flashlight

2. Siri, Nox

Nox is the counter-charm to Lumos, used to extinguish the light. It’s the magical way to turn off a light source.  Harry Potter and Hermione Granger used this spell to turn off their wand lights in the Shrieking Shack. It was used when Harry was in the passage beneath the Whomping Willow which leads to the Shrieking Shack.

Saying Hey Siri, Nox, or Siri, Nox will have the same effect on your iPhone by instantly turning off your flashlight. This spell is also built into Siri like Lumos.

  • Pronunciation – NOCKSS
  • Purpose – Turn off the Flashlight

You can use a similar kind of magic to quickly open apps. Simply say Hey Siri, Accio [App Name] or Siri, Accio [App Name], and Siri will open the specified app. For example, saying “Hey Siri, Accio Messages” will open your Messages app. This functionality is built directly into Siri, so no extra setup is required for this as well.
