9 Ways to Turn off Focus Mode on iPhone and iPad

Focus Mode, which debuted in iOS 15, is an improved version of the iPhone and iPad’s Do Not Disturb mode. When enabled, it mutes notifications and changes the home and lock screens, among other things. It also adds a status message to the Messages app stating that your notifications have been silenced. You can disable Focus mode if any of these functions bother you. Let’s look at how to disable Focus mode on iPhone and iPad.

Disable Focus Mode on iOS

Apple makes it easy to turn off Focus mode and you can do it in a number of ways. You can either completely disable it or turn off certain features from Focus. Here is how to do both.

1. From Settings

As expected, you can disable Focus modes from Settings. Open Settings on your iPhone and iPad and go to Focus.

Tap on the currently active Focus and turn off the toggle next to its name.

2. From Control Center

Focus mode can be disabled quickly from Control Center as shown below.

1. Open Control Center on your phone. For iPhone and iPad with home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen to launch Control Center. On devices without a home button, swipe down from the top-right corner.

2. Here you will see a button with the label of the currently active Focus mode, such as Do not disturb, Personal, Sleep, Work, etc. Tap on the label and not on its icon. Pressing the label will bring the list of Focus modes. The active one is highlighted. Tap on it to disable it.

3. From Lock Screen

When a Focus mode is enabled, you will see its icon on the Lock screen. Tap the Focus mode icon on the lock screen and press the highlighted Focus mode from the list to turn it off.

4. Turn Off Scheduled Focus

Many times, even though it might seem that the Focus mode is disabled, it’s actually set to activate automatically at a set time or as per certain conditions. You will find these automatic schedules under each Focus mode setting. Navigate to Settings > Focus. Tap on each mode and look for Turn on automatically, schedule, or the automatic section. Make sure it is disabled or change the timing as per your requirements.

Tip: Under Sleep Focus, check and turn off Sleep schedule.

5. Turn Off Focus Status

One of the important features of the Focus mode is the Focus status. It allows apps like Messages to display status that you have notifications silenced. If you only want to turn this off without disabling the entire Focus, you can do that.

Open Settings > Focus and tap on the focus whose Focus status you want to disable. Tap on Focus status and turn off the toggle for Share Focus status. You will need to turn it off individually for each Focus.

6. Turn off Focus Mode for Few People or Apps

Luckily, you can customize each Focus mode to suit your needs by turning off Focus modes for selected people and apps. That means, when a Focus mode is enabled, its conditions will not apply to the whitelisted people. And such apps will be able to send you notifications.

To do so, open the Focus mode that you want to edit by going to Settings > Focus. Under the Allowed notifications section, tap on People or Apps and enable the contacts or apps (such as WhatsApp) that you want to whitelist from Focus.

7. Turn off Focus on Other Apple Devices

If you have multiple Apple devices, make sure to check the Focus setting on each of them. That’s because Apple provides a useful (yet dangerous) setting called Share across devices, which, when enabled, activates Focus on all of your Apple devices signed in to the same Apple ID.

To deactivate this setting, open Settings > Focus. Turn off the toggle next to Share across devices.

8. Turn off Focus for Messages App

For the Messages app, you can directly disable Focus from its Settings by going to Settings > Messages. Turn off the toggle next to Focus.

9. Delete Focus

Lastly, if you are unable to turn off Focus for some reason, you should delete it. To do so, open Settings > Focus and tap on the focus that you want to remove. Press the Delete Focus button at the bottom. That will remove it. You can always add it back or create a new custom mode by tapping on the add (+) icon on the Focus screen.
